Balloon Trip, the third option on the main menu, has the same controls as the main game, press A or B to make Tingle flap his hands to ascend. Do nothing and he will slowly fall. When first starting, you’ll no doubt notice the small lights flying across the screen. These are small balls of electricity, that will zap Tingle, and cause him to fall if they make contact. The fact that tingle has two balloons is purely for cosmetic reasons; he only has one life.
The objective is simple. Collect as many rupees as you can, raising your score, whilst avoiding obstacles. Rupees are attached to balloons and float in one place. If you collect enough of them, the remainder will change color ala pinball, increasing their worth. The camera will scroll horizontally to the left, pushing you if don’t keep up with it.
As you float along, you’ll come across islands with signs that says “save”. These islands are essentially checkpoints and mark your entrance upon a new “phase”. If Tingle crashes, he’ll start on the same phase he was before, but all points will be lost. Otherwise, the islands will give a you short break from tappin’ buttons to stay airborne.
You’ll also come across what appears to be bubbles flying up from the ocean. Once Tingle is guided into them, they will pop, freezing the screen. The upside is that if a Rupee package was nearly missed, it can quickly be grabbed. The downside is that you will not progress in the level, nor earn any points.
The last thing to look out for are the fish, who seem to strongly resemble Cheep Cheeps from the Mario and Zelda series. They live, quite appropriately, in the sea. If you guide Tingle too close to their territory, they’ll take a bite out of him. Rest assured though, the sky is free for all. No bothersome birds or flying fish will harass Tingle up there.
